MM 4.1: Quality evaluation of cotton fibre
After harvesting and ginning, cotton is pressed into bales for easy storage and transportation. Bales are supposed to be stored in warehouses protecting cotton from direct sun and rain. However, it is observed that in our country bales are quite often stored in open. This may be affecting the fibre properties. No systematic study seems to have been done on the effect of open storage of bales on fibre quality. It is proposed to store cotton in warehouse and in the open simultaneously and study the effect on fibre properties through comparison. Breeder's samples from different regions developed under the Mini Mission Programme will be evaluated for fibre properties, analyzed and reported to the respective breeders and also to the TMC MMI Mission Head. Selected samples showing promising fibre traits will be studied for structural and morphological properties. These will include crystallinality, orientation, cross sectional features etc. Number of such samples will be restricted to about 25 to 30.
