MM 4.2: Commercial technology development for value addition
Value Addition by preparation of Absorbent Cotton from Non-spinnable Cotton can be achieved. Very coarse non-spinnable cottons are ideally suited for the preparation of absorbent cotton. Conventional chemical method wherein the material is kier boiled at high temperature (1400C) for two hours is well known for the preparation of absorbent cotton. This method is energy intensive and discharges toxic effluents. Alternatively, enzymatic scoring also results in such products but again become expensive. CIRCOT has developed a method wherein the material is subjected to a cocktail of enzymes in a microbial in-situ system at room temperature. Laboratory conditions for the whole method have been standardized and scale up traits is under way. Commercial application of this technology along with economic feasibility will be studied in this project.
